Base44 Review: Can It Actually Build An Ecommerce Store?

Base44 can run an online store, but is it the right choice? This Base44 review covers pricing, features, and limitations to help you decide.

If you’re here, you’re probably wondering whether Base44 can actually build an e-commerce store. As I’ll explore in this Base44 review, the short answer is yes, but with a few limitations.

Here’s the thing: Base44 is an AI app builder, not a dedicated e-commerce platform, so essential features like inventory management, shipping, and taxes require extra setup work and integrations.

So, how much can you actually do with Base44, and when does it make sense to use it? That’s exactly what I’ll dig into in this guide. I’ll take a close look at what Base44 can actually do for e-commerce, from its Stripe integration and pricing structure to how its credit system works and where its limitations become apparent.

I’ll also cover Base44 alternatives worth considering, from Shopify and Wix to BuildYourStore and Lovable, so you have all the information you need to decide whether it’s the right fit for your store.

What Is Base44?

Base44 review to build an e-commerce store

Base44 is an AI-powered app builder that turns a written prompt into a working web app. Instead of writing code, you simply tell it what you want to create, from booking systems and customer portals to an online store. From there, Base44 handles the technical side, including hosting, user logins, and a database to store information.

The company was originally an independent startup until it was acquired by Wix in June 2025, although Base44 continues to operate as a separate product.

The platform operates on a credit-based system with two types of credits:

  • Message credits are used when you interact with the AI to build, edit, or fix your app.
  • Integration credits are consumed when your app uses built-in services, such as sending emails, generating images, or making AI requests.

Both credit allowances depend on your subscription plan. Don’t worry, I’ll break all of this down later in the article.

Is Base44 Built For E-commerce?

Base44's e-commerce templates

First things first: Yes, Base44 can build online stores and e-commerce websites. That said, it isn’t specifically designed for that purpose. Let’s zoom in.

To create online stores, Base44 offers e-commerce templates that enable specific commerce capabilities, such as product catalogs, shopping carts, checkout, and shipping and tax rules.

In other words, online selling is definitely one of the use cases Base44 supports, specifically for building the store itself. Sellers can describe what they want through AI prompts, and Base44 generates the corresponding features without requiring them to write code. So far, so good.

Now, here’s the main limitation: Base44 isn’t a dedicated e-commerce platform. Unlike platforms specifically designed for online selling, it doesn’t provide the same standardized, all-in-one system for managing your store’s operations. Instead, you’re working with e-commerce features built into individual apps or templates, which may require additional setup and testing.

Payment processing is a good example. Base44 offers a built-in Stripe integration that lets you set up checkout and accept payments through AI prompts. However, you’ll still need to configure the integration, connect your Stripe account, and test your checkout before accepting real payments.

I’ll cover the setup process in more detail below, but for now, the important distinction is that many of the features needed to run an e-commerce store depend on templates, integrations, or custom configurations.

So, what’s the verdict? Base44 is a general-purpose AI app builder that can create a working online store, but it isn’t a dedicated e-commerce platform. While some templates come with many of the necessary features already connected, you may still need to configure and maintain parts of your store’s operations yourself.

What Base44 Includes vs. What You Still Have To Build

So, what exactly do you get with Base44, and what will you have to set up yourself? Here’s a breakdown of its built-in features vs. the e-commerce tools that may require additional work.

As you can see, processing payments through Stripe or Base44 Payments requires Base44’s Builder plan or higher, billed monthly at $50/month. That means you can experiment with a storefront on the Free plan, but you’ll need to upgrade to accept payments.

The takeaway is this: Base44 provides much of the technical foundation, but the e-commerce-specific operations depend on the template you choose and how you set it up. Some templates already include these features, while others may require considerable customization or upgrades to get everything working together.

How Base44’s Stripe Checkout Works

Once you’ve built your Base44 store, accepting payments through Stripe requires a bit of setup. No need to panic, though: I’ll walk you through it step by step so you don’t get lost in the process—no coding experience needed, as most of it happens directly through the AI chat.

Here’s how it works:

1. Install Stripe. Open your app’s AI chat and ask Base44 to set up Stripe payments.

2. Click Install Stripe to get started in test mode.

3. Create your products and prices. Ask Base44’s AI chat to add the products you want to sell and specify their prices. Base44 creates these records directly in Stripe, where you can manage them later through your Stripe Dashboard.

4. Test your checkout. Once Stripe is installed, publish your app to test the checkout flow. Go to Dashboard → Integrations → Stripe, select Try a test payment, copy the test card number, and go through the checkout flow (payments won’t work in the editor preview).

5. Claim your Stripe sandbox. Once you’ve tested your checkout, you’ll need to connect your own Stripe account to start accepting real payments. Go to Dashboard → Integrations → Stripe, click Claim your Stripe sandbox, and select Claim & Go Live.

6. Complete your Stripe onboarding. You’ll be redirected to Stripe, where you can sign in to an existing account or create a new one. Follow the instructions to provide your business information. Once you’re done, return to Base44 and check that the sandbox is marked as claimed.

7. Finish connecting your account. Back in Base44, go to Dashboard → Integrations → Stripe and open Add your live API keys from Stripe. If Stripe still needs additional information, click Resume setup in Stripe to complete the remaining requirements.

8. Activate live payments. Complete any remaining Stripe verification steps before activating live payments. Once activated, Base44 automatically adds your live API keys and switches your checkout from test mode to live mode, allowing you to accept real payments.

Once connected, you can also use the Payments tab to monitor revenue, transactions, and subscriptions without constantly switching between dashboards.

What Should You Double-Check Before Going Live?

As you can see, connecting Stripe is super simple, but of course there’s always something worth checking before you start accepting real orders. You know, just to make sure nothing decides to stop working at the last minute.

Here are some potential issues and how to handle them:

  • Test checkout on your published app. Base44 confirms that Stripe checkout doesn’t work in the editor preview. You’ll need to publish your app and use Stripe’s test mode to simulate a purchase without charging real money.
  • Complete your payment account setup. Stripe may require additional business or banking information before activating live payments. If you’re using Base44 Payments instead, you can start accepting payments before completing verification, but you won’t receive payouts until your account is verified.
  • Check what happens after a successful payment. Base44’s documentation recommends configuring your payment flow to verify purchases and update the appropriate app records. For an e-commerce store, that means checking whether orders are recorded correctly and inventory updates as expected. These workflows depend on how you’ve configured your store.

In other words, accepting payments is relatively simple. Making sure the rest of your store responds correctly to those payments is where you may need some extra configuration.

What About Base44 Payments?

Base44 Payments' dashboard

Interestingly, Stripe isn’t your only option. Base44 also offers Base44 Payments, powered by Wix, a built-in payment solution that doesn’t require a separate Stripe account.

It’s available on the Builder plan or higher, and it supports one-time payments and subscriptions, with a dashboard for managing transactions, refunds, and payouts. However, it isn’t a global feature, as it currently supports eligible businesses in 12 countries, including the US, UK, Germany, Spain, and Italy.

If you’re eligible for this option, setting it up is pretty simple:

1. Connect Base44 Payments. Open your app’s AI chat and ask it to enable online payments. If you’re eligible, select Connect and accept the terms and service fees.

2. Publish your store. Once your app is live, you can start accepting payments from customers.

3. Open your Payments dashboard. Go to Dashboard → Overview and click Manage next to Payments.

4. Complete your account verification. Enter your business details, address, and bank account information, and upload any documents requested to verify your identity or business.

Unlike Stripe’s setup process, Base44 Payments lets you start accepting payments before completing verification. That said, you need the Builder plan or higher to set it up, and you won’t receive payouts until your account is verified.

Base44 Pricing: What A Store Costs

Base44 pricing

Let’s talk money. Base44 pricing starts at $0 with a free plan, but there’s an important catch if you’re planning to sell products: the Base44 free tier doesn’t really work for e-commerce. You’ll need at least the Builder plan ($50/month billed monthly) to start accepting payments.

Base44 offers five main pricing plans, each with different credit allowances and features. Here’s how they compare, according to its official pricing page.

PlanMonthly billingAnnual billingMessage credits/moIntegration credits/moWhat changes
Free$0$025 (max. 5/day)100Core tools, hosting, database, and up to 5 apps
Starter$20/mo$16/mo ($192/year)1002,000Unlimited apps, custom domain, code editing, and removal of Base44 branding
Builder$50/mo$40/mo ($480/year)25010,000Stripe and Base44 Payments, backend functions, GitHub integration, and AI model selection
Pro$100/mo$80/mo ($960/year)50020,000More credits and early access to beta features
Elite$200/mo$160/mo ($1,920/year)1,20050,000Highest standard credit allowance, priority support, and additional scaling options

Base44 also offers an Enterprise plan with custom pricing, credits, and support for larger organizations.

And if you’re a student, teacher, or academic staff member, you’re in luck! Base44 offers a 50% academic discount on its Starter and Builder plans. The discount applies for up to 12 months with monthly billing or the first year with annual billing. For example, you could get the Builder plan for just $20/month billed annually, instead of the regular $40/month.

To claim it, you’ll need to verify your academic email address while you’re still on the Free plan, before purchasing your first subscription.

How Do Base44 Credits Work?

Here’s where Base44 pricing gets a little more complicated. Instead of charging only a flat subscription fee, the tool also limits usage through two types of credits:

  • Message credits: These are consumed when you ask Base44’s AI to build, modify, or fix something. For example, changing a button’s color might use around 0.5 credits, while adding a complex feature or updating several pages can consume 2-4 credits.
  • Integration credits: These cover your app’s use of Base44’s built-in services, such as sending emails, generating images, making AI requests, running workflows, or chatting with in-app AI agents. For example, sending a standard email costs approximately one integration credit, while each message to an in-app agent starts at about three integration credits.

Now, not every customer action uses integration credits. Regular database reads and updates don’t consume them, and you can make manual edits in Base44’s visual editor without spending message credits.

According to Base44’s credit documentation, credits reset every month and generally don’t roll over. The main exception is certain mid-cycle plan upgrades.

Which Base44 Plan Do You Need For An E-commerce Store?

Builder is the minimum plan for a store that accepts payments through Base44’s supported payment integrations, so that’s the starting point if you want to sell online.

That said, if you’re just testing, you don’t need to pay $40 or $50 right away. The Free plan is useful for experimenting with e-commerce templates and building a basic storefront. Just remember that you’re limited to 25 message credits per month, with a maximum of 5 per day.

Starter gives you more room to customize your store, connect a domain, and test your idea, but you still won’t have access to Stripe or Base44 Payments.

So, once you’re ready to accept real orders, Builder unlocks those payment integrations, as well as backend functions and more flexibility to customize your store.

The real question is this: when should you upgrade to a higher-tier plan? Well, it depends on how much you’re building and how your store uses credits. For example, Pro might make sense if you’re constantly adding new features, experimenting with designs, or updating your storefront and regularly running out of message credits.

Meanwhile, Elite could be worth considering if you’re running a much more complex store with AI-powered customer support, automated emails, or other features that consume lots of integration credits.

💡 Pro Tip: Constantly monitor your credit usage and upgrade when your current plan starts limiting what you can do, rather than paying more for credits you might never use.

Additional Costs To Consider

One of the main advantages of Base44’s pricing structure is that there aren’t hidden fees to account for. But, of course, there are some additional fees to keep in mind that come with online selling:

  1. Payment processing: Both Stripe and Base44 Payments charge a general 2.9% + $0.30 fee per successful domestic card transaction at their standard US rate. However, there are some exceptions. For example, Base44 Payments’ fees for American Express and PayPal are higher. So, as a rule of thumb, keep in mind that fees vary by country, payment method, and transaction type.
  2. Domain renewal: Renewal prices vary by domain extension and registrar. Eligible annual Base44 plans from Starter upward include a free domain for the first year, provided you claim it within 60 days.
  3. Optional third-party tools: Base44 includes most of the essentials, but specialized services for email marketing, shipping and fulfillment, or tax compliance may come with additional subscription fees.

Regarding credit limits, monthly subscriptions already include a set number of message and integration credits, as I’ve covered before, so using them doesn’t generate extra charges.

Just keep in mind that building an online store can involve plenty of trial and error, and you may run out of credits before your next reset. If that happens regularly, you might need to upgrade to a more expensive plan.

Keep an eye on integration credits, too. If you run out, features that depend on them may stop working until your allowance resets or you upgrade.

Example: How Much Would A Small Base44 Store Cost In Its First Year?

Let’s imagine you’re using Base44 to launch a small online store in the US, using Stripe as your payment processor, and making 20 sales per month at $30 each. It’s a simplified example, but it gives you an idea of the costs.

That’s 240 transactions and $7,200 in annual sales.

At Stripe’s standard US domestic-card rate, payment processing would cost approximately:

($7,200 × 2.9%) + (240 × $0.30) = $280.80/year

Here’s what your first-year costs would look like:

ExpenseAnnual Base44 billingMonthly Base44 billing
Builder subscription$480$600
Stripe processing fees$280.80$280.80
Total first-year cost$760.80$880.80

Base44 vs Shopify: Which One Is More Cost-Effective?

Base44 vs Shopify for e-commerce

To start comparing Base44 to Shopify, let’s look at their monthly subscriptions: the Base44 Builder plan (required for an online store) is $50/month (billed monthly), while Shopify’s Basic plan (enough to sell online) is $39/month (billed monthly).

For the same 240 annual transactions at $30 each, Shopify Basic’s standard US domestic card rate through Shopify Payments is also 2.9% + $0.30 (the same as Base44’s standard fees).

That gives us:

PlatformFirst year, annual billingFirst year, monthly billing
Base44 Builder + Stripe$760.80$880.80
Shopify Basic + Shopify Payments$628.80$748.80

These estimates include subscription and standard payment processing fees only. They exclude product costs, shipping, marketing, taxes, and other expenses.

In this scenario, if you’re starting a Shopify store, the Basic plan costs $132 less per year, regardless of whether you choose monthly or annual billing.

But there’s another important difference beyond price. Shopify includes standardized e-commerce features such as product management, inventory tracking, and order management, whereas Base44 may require additional setup to achieve the same functionality.

On top of that, Shopify gives you much more flexibility and freedom to test. Unlike Base44, Shopify doesn’t rely on message credits for everyday store customization. You can edit your storefront, test different layouts, and make changes without worrying about running out of credits or having to upgrade halfway through.

With Base 44, on the other hand, most AI-driven adjustments consume part of your monthly allowance, which can become limiting (and more expensive if you need to upgrade).

This doesn’t mean Shopify is completely unlimited. Certain AI features, like AI image generation and app creation, have usage limits. But regular store editing doesn’t operate on a credit-based model.

What Base44 Does Well And Where It Falls Short For Stores

I’ve gone through the features and pricing, but how does all of this translate into actually running an online store? Let’s break down where Base44 shines and where things can get a little more complicated.

What Base44 does well:

  • Fast store creation. You can go from a written description to a functional storefront without coding. Plus, e-commerce templates give you a head start with catalogs, carts, and checkout flows.
  • Flexible customization. Unlike traditional store builders, Base44 lets you create custom layouts, product fields, and business workflows through AI prompts, without being limited to predefined e-commerce features.
  • Built-in technical infrastructure. Hosting, user authentication, databases, and analytics are already included, so you don’t have to set up those services separately.
  • Stripe integration. You can create products, configure prices, and set up checkout through the AI chat. Better yet, your Stripe products and prices remain manageable directly from your Stripe account.

Where Base44 falls short:

  • No standardized e-commerce management system. Some templates include product catalogs, inventory tracking, and order management, but these aren’t universal, preconfigured systems across every Base44 store.
  • More responsibility for store operations. Shipping rates, tax rules, and fulfillment workflows may require additional setup. You’ll also need to verify that orders and stock levels update correctly after purchases.
  • Credit limits can interrupt development. Every AI-driven change uses message credits, so frequent revisions, troubleshooting, and testing can quickly eat into your monthly allowance.
  • Some branding limitations around login. While Base44 supports customizable login pages, its default Google sign-in displays Base44 branding. Using your own branding requires custom Google OAuth, available on Builder or higher. Apple sign-in also displays Base44’s name.
  • SEO requires some attention. Base44 includes technical SEO tools, such as sitemaps, meta tags, and structured data, but its full SEO setup is designed for custom domains, and you’ll still need to optimize your product pages and content yourself.

Overall, Base44 gives you plenty of creative freedom, but that flexibility comes with more responsibility for how your store operates. The more complex your business becomes, the more important the trade-off is.

When Base44 Makes Sense For A Store (And When It Doesn’t)

By now, we’ve established that Base44 can build an e-commerce store. But should you actually use it for yours? Here’s a quick way to decide based on what you’re planning to sell and how you want to manage your business.

Base44 makes sense if...A dedicated e-commerce platform is better if...
You're selling a handful of products or digital goods and don't need complicated inventory or shipping workflows. You're managing a growing catalog with multiple product variants, stock levels, and frequent inventory updates.
You need highly customized features, layouts, or business logic that standard e-commerce templates don't easily support. You want built-in systems for managing taxes, shipping, orders, and fulfillment without building custom workflows.
You're comfortable experimenting with AI prompts, testing different features, and refining your store as you go.You'd rather manage products, orders, and daily operations through a ready-made dashboard with minimal setup.
Your store is just one part of a larger custom app, such as a membership portal, booking system, or customer dashboard. You're planning to start a dropshipping business and need supplier integrations, inventory synchronization, and automated order fulfillment.

So, which should you choose?

👉 Choose a dedicated e-commerce platform like Shopify if you’re a non-technical founder whose main goal is to launch an online store and start selling. You’ll get the essential store management tools already built into the system, leaving you more time to focus on finding products, attracting customers, and making sales.

👉 Base44 is worth considering if customization is your main priority, especially if you’re building something that goes beyond a traditional storefront, even if that leads to higher costs and more time spent setting everything up.

Best Base44 Alternatives For Selling Products

So, what if Base44 doesn’t quite fit what you’re looking for? No worries: there are plenty of Base44 alternatives, from dedicated e-commerce platforms to AI builders that help you launch a store without starting from scratch.

The main difference is whether you want a tool that can create e-commerce features or one that already has the infrastructure to run an online business.

Dedicated E-commerce Platforms

Dedicated e-commerce platforms, like Shopify, Wix, WooCommerce, and BigCommerce, for Base44 alternatives

If your main goal is to sell products, these platforms come with built-in catalogs, inventory tracking, order management, checkout, and tools for setting up taxes and shipping.

  • Shopify: Starts at $29/month billed yearly or $39/month billed monthly for the Basic plan. It provides a complete e-commerce management system, plus integrations for dropshipping, marketing, and fulfillment. It’s particularly useful for sellers planning to grow their catalogs or automate store operations.
  • Wix: Its Core plan (required to accept payments) starts at $29/month (billed yearly) or $36/month (billed monthly). Wix combines a flexible website editor with e-commerce features, making it an interesting option for stores where design and branding are just as important as selling.
  • WooCommerce: This is a free, open-source e-commerce platform for WordPress, with built-in product catalogs, inventory tracking, order management, and tax and shipping settings. While the software itself is free, you’ll need to pay for hosting, a domain, and any premium extensions you choose. It offers plenty of customization and control, making it a solid choice for sellers who already use WordPress.
  • BigCommerce: Starts at $29/month billed annually or $39/month billed monthly for its Core plan. It offers built-in e-commerce tools and multiple selling channels. However, its pricing structure includes sales-volume thresholds that can trigger plan upgrades, plus additional fees when using certain payment providers.

Unlike Base44, these platforms don’t require you to build your store management system from scratch. You still need to add your products and set up payments, shipping, and taxes, but you’re working with tools specifically designed for those tasks.

AI E-Commerce Store Builders

BuildYourStore, an AI Shopify store builder, one of the best Base44 alternatives

Now, what if you want the convenience of building with AI without having to set up an entire e-commerce backend yourself? That’s where dedicated AI store builders come in. They offer a middle ground between Base44’s AI-powered customization and the ready-made e-commerce infrastructure of platforms like Shopify.

For example, BuildYourStore uses AI to generate a Shopify store in minutes, including a customizable theme, product pages, and 10 preloaded products selected for your niche.

Its basic store-building service is free and comes with a free .store domain, although you’ll still need to pay for a Shopify subscription to keep your store operational.

The main advantage is that your store runs on Shopify’s e-commerce infrastructure, so you don’t have to build your own inventory management, order management, or checkout systems from scratch.

Of course, there’s still work to do after your store is generated. You’ll need to review your products, customize your branding, set up shipping and payments, and do some marketing to attract customers.

But if you like the idea of building a store with AI but find Base44 a little too complicated, BuildYourStore offers a simpler, more straightforward way to get started. You can build your store for free now by signing up and following a quick step-by-step process.

Other AI App Builders

AI App builders like Lovable and Bolt, for Base44 alternatives

If what interests you most about Base44 is its flexibility, you could also consider AI app builders like Lovable and Bolt.

Like Base44, both create web apps from written prompts and support Stripe payments, including one-time purchases and subscriptions. You can build storefronts, product catalogs, and custom order-management interfaces through AI.

That said, they share many of Base44’s e-commerce limitations. While they can generate the features you need, you’ll still have to configure and test systems for inventory, shipping, taxes, and order management.

One interesting difference is that Lovable offers a Shopify integration, letting you create a customized storefront while Shopify handles products, inventory, orders, and payments.

At the end of the day, Lovable and Bolt are worth exploring if you want the creative freedom of an AI app builder. But if your priority is running an online store with minimal setup, a dedicated e-commerce platform is still the more practical choice.

💡 Pro Tip: If you’d like to explore Lovable a bit more, check out my full Lovable e-commerce guide, where I cover practical workarounds and alternatives for using it to build an online store.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Base44 Actually Build A Working Online Store?

Yes, Base44 can create a functional online store with product pages, shopping carts, checkout, and payment processing. It even offers e-commerce templates with many of these features already configured. However, unlike dedicated e-commerce platforms, it doesn’t provide a standardized system for managing every aspect of your business. Depending on your template, you may need to set up inventory, shipping, taxes, and order management yourself.

Does Base44 Have A Shopping Cart And Checkout Built In?

Base44 doesn’t automatically include a shopping cart and checkout in every app, but its e-commerce templates can provide both. It also supports built-in payment integrations through Stripe and Base44 Payments. Both integrations let customers complete purchases, although you may need to customize how your store handles orders, inventory, and other operations after checkout.

What Plan Do You Need On Base44 To Accept Payments?

To accept payments on Base44, you need at least the Builder plan, which costs $40/month billed annually or $50/month billed monthly. This unlocks the Stripe integration or Base44 Payments. Builder also includes 250 message credits and 10,000 integration credits per month.

How Much Does Base44 Cost For An E-commerce Project?

For an e-commerce project, Base44 requires the Builder plan, which starts at $40/month billed annually or $50/month billed monthly. You’ll also need to account for payment processing fees (around 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction), domain renewals, and any optional third-party tools. If your store requires more credits than your plan includes, upgrading could also increase your expenses.

What Are The Best Base44 Alternatives For Selling Products?

If your main goal is e-commerce, some of the best Base44 alternatives are dedicated e-commerce platforms like Shopify, Wix, WooCommerce, and BigCommerce, which offer tools like product catalogs, inventory management, and order tracking. For AI-assisted store creation, BuildYourStore generates a Shopify-based storefront without requiring you to build the e-commerce backend yourself. Meanwhile, Lovable and Bolt offer AI-powered customization similar to Base44, although they may require additional configuration for e-commerce operations.

Can You Migrate Off Base44 Later If You Outgrow It?

Yes, you can migrate off Base44, but moving your entire store isn’t as simple as downloading a file. On Builder and higher plans, Base44 lets you export your React/Vite project, including frontend code, custom backend functions, and data structures. You can also export individual database tables as CSV files. However, the exported code still relies on Base44’s backend for authentication, databases, and integrations. To move your store completely to another platform, you’ll need to replace those services and adapt your code. So, migration is possible, but it may require technical assistance, especially for a complex store.

Final Verdict: Is Base44 Worth It For E-commerce?

Too long, didn’t read? Then here’s the verdict: can Base44 actually build an e-commerce store? Absolutely. But whether you should is another question.

Base44 offers plenty of flexibility for creating customized storefronts with AI prompts, but managing inventory, shipping, and orders may require additional setup. If customization is your priority, it’s worth exploring. Otherwise, a dedicated e-commerce platform or AI store builder will likely save you time and effort.

And if you like the idea of building a store with AI but want something simpler, BuildYourStore offers an interesting middle ground. Its AI store builder generates a Shopify store in minutes, so you can quickly get to the Shopify dashboard with half the job done.
