Shopify Audiences
Shopify Audiences is a free advertising tool built into Shopify Plus. It uses machine learning (software that learns from data to make predictions) and aggregated purchase data from thousands of Shopify merchants to generate high-intent buyer lists for ad campaigns.
It’s exclusive to Shopify Plus merchants using Shopify Payments in the United States or Canada.
Shopify Audiences in Detail
Shopify Audiences works by pooling anonymized commerce data from opted-in merchants. Instead of relying on one store’s traffic or pixel data (a pixel is a small piece of code that tracks visitor behavior on your site), the system draws from a network-wide dataset of real purchase behavior.
When you select a product or category, Shopify Audiences builds a custom audience list and automatically exports it to your connected ad accounts.
Currently supported platforms include Meta (Facebook and Instagram), Google Ads, Pinterest, TikTok, Snapchat, and Criteo.
Version 2.4 introduced four audience types:
- Retargeting Boost. Surfaces high-intent shoppers who have already shown buying signals across the merchant network.
- Prospecting lists. Targets new potential customers based on cross-merchant purchase patterns.
- Lookalike audiences. Finds shoppers whose behavior closely mirrors your existing buyers.
- Existing Customers Plus. An exclusion list that filters out repeat buyers from prospecting campaigns, so you don’t spend ad budget on people who would likely buy again without being targeted.
A built-in Benchmarks dashboard lets you compare your campaign performance (click-through rate, conversion rate, and CPM, which stands for cost per thousand impressions) against similar stores.
Shopify Audiences vs. Standard Ad Platform Targeting
Standard ad platforms like Meta and Google build their targeting audiences from browsing behavior and engagement signals. Shopify Audiences uses actual purchase data from real transactions across thousands of stores.
Because buying behavior is a stronger signal of future purchase intent than browsing alone, audiences built from transactional data tend to convert at higher rates than standard lookalike segments.
Privacy is handled through hashing and aggregation. No individual store’s customer records are exposed to other merchants in the network.
Why Is Shopify Audiences Important for eCommerce Sellers?
Ad targeting has become harder in recent years. Apple’s iOS 14.5 update introduced App Tracking Transparency, which limited advertisers’ ability to track users across apps. The ongoing deprecation (phasing out) of third-party cookies has further reduced the data that ad platforms rely on.
These shifts have driven up Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC, the total cost of acquiring a new paying customer) for most online stores.
Shopify Audiences offers a first-party data alternative, meaning it’s based on data collected directly through real purchases rather than third-party tracking. For Shopify Plus merchants, this is a meaningful way to recover targeting efficiency without relying on the tracking signals that have been restricted.
